A great way to create websites
The Genesis Framework for WordPress is a popular theme framework used by many website designers to form the basis of their WordPress websites. I use Genesis for all my projects as there are some serious benefits to both clients and web designers.
The Genesis Framework is a StudioPress product. It is activated in any WordPress installation as a parent theme and uses a child theme for the website design so that the core Genesis files do not need to be modified.
A child theme works in conjunction with the framework to produce your website. The framework files are not modified in any way by the designer allowing regular official updates by StudioPress, alongside updates of WordPress core files, to improve SEO and prevent security issues.
The child theme is created or modified to style or add functionality to your parent theme i.e. the Genesis Framework. StudioPress include a free sample theme to get you started or you may purchase a child theme from StudioPress or a third party. Using a child theme is the best and safest way to create themes for WordPress.
Here is why I use the Genesis Framework in our projects:
Less development time, lower costs
Bespoke systems are fine for large companies with bags of money and a lot of time on their hands. For most companies, especially small businesses, cost can be a deciding factor with any marketing project.
By using the Genesis Framework, we drastically cut development time saving months of work that would normally cost the client a small fortune. This way, our clients save money and the website is available to go live much sooner.
Solid, stable and secure
As a web designer, one of the most important factors for me is the stability of the framework.
As with WordPress, the core files of the Genesis Framework are regularly updated to create a solid, stable and secure infrastructure.
These updates do not change your design but work out any bugs or compatibility issues that could arise from WordPress or plugin updates as well as minimising security threats.
As I mentioned above, the framework’s core files are never altered or modified. Instead we use child themes to style and add functionality to the website.
Either buy themes from StudioPress or a third party website, or create your own. Bought themes are highly customisable and reduce your workload even further.
Your designs may easily be applied with your own child theme. StudioPress even give you a sample child theme when you buy the framework to use as a building block. Creating your own themes is fun and ensures unique and original designs.
Compatibility with plugins
There are many Genesis-specific plugins available on the web. However, you only have to use these if you wish.
Most plugins found in the WordPress plugin directory can be used with your child theme. In fact, I have never had any plugin compatibility issues with the Genesis framework.
There are some great Genesis-specific plugins out there and I use several in my own projects, for example:
- Genesis 404 – to create a customised 404 page
- Genesis Responsive Video – automatically resizes video to the screen size
- Genesis Simple Comments – make changes to field labels in the comments area of your posts
- Genesis Simple Edits – make changes to the footer area – text, anchor text and links, copyright notices
There are many others out there, each making your life easier. You can, of course, edit the PHP to make these changes instead of using a plugin but that takes extra time for which you would have to charge the client.
Never make light of the support a community can offer. We all need help sometimes. I have found the Genesis community forums very helpful whenever I had a specific problem. If you cannot find the answer to your query anywhere in the forums, post your question and someone usually answers quickly.
Nine times out of ten someone else has had the same issue as you and has already posted a solution.
Unlimited use at no extra cost
When you purchase the framework, you pay one time only. Once you have purchased the Genesis Framework, you may use it in as many personal, commercial and client projects as you like at no extra cost. This also goes for any themes purchased from StudioPress.
It also includes all future updates too which is excellent value for money and one of the reasons I first started using the framework.
Lower development time and costs by purchasing the Genesis Framework for WordPress. Versatile, solid and stable, the framework is value for money. Use Genesis-specific or other WordPress plugins to add functionality to your website and you have a recipe for success.
Since discovering Genesis, I use it in all my projects as I find it the best foundation for the websites I create.
Do you use or are you think about buying the Genesis Framework? Do you find it value for money?
